Understanding E-Rate

E-Rate is a federal program that provides discounts of 20–90% on internet access and internal networking costs for eligible schools and libraries. If your district is a public or nonprofit K-12 institution, you almost certainly qualify. The discount level depends on factors including the percentage of students eligible for the National School Lunch Program and whether your district is in a rural area. The FCC's minimum broadband standard for schools is 1 Mbps per student, meaning a district with 500 students should have at least 500 Mbps of available bandwidth. But that floor was set years ago and doesn't fully account for simultaneous video conferencing, cloud-based testing platforms, AI-assisted learning tools, 1:1 device programs, and other advances. Many districts that technically meet this standard still experience congestion at peak times. A network assessment can tell you where you actually stand.
